On Friday 20th May Form 3 spent a very exciting and informative day at Southwark Cathedral. The children went on a trail around the cathedral looking for different Christian signs and symbols. They were shown the eagle and dragon on the lectern, the font and the symbolism involved in a Christening, the stained glass windows, the Eucharist on an altar and special clothing and seats for the Bishops. The children were able to dress up as bishops and were taught about the liturgical colours used at different times in the Church calendar. At the end of the trail they were treated to a demonstration of the organ by a friend of Mrs Izzard’s who played a wonderful, loud rendition of Widor’s Toccata.
The children also attended a workshop where they designed and made clay tiles showing some of the symbols they had learned about. They have brought the tiles back to school and will be painting them in the next few weeks. Please click here to see pictures of their finished tiles.
